The following reflection is by Triona Doherty to mark the Feast Of Christ The King
Pilate plays an interesting role in today’s Gospel when he asks Jesus that all-important question: ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ Is it the question of someone who does not understand and wants to know more about Jesus? Has Pilate had a sudden insight into who Jesus is? Is he gently mocking him? Or is he simply carrying out an investigation? After Jesus speaks about his kingdom, Pilate asks again, ‘So you are a king then?’, prompting Jesus to reply more boldly: ‘Yes, I am a king.’
Today we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. It can be hard for us to grasp what Jesus means when he talks about the kingdom. He tells Pilate that his kingdom is ‘not of this world’. He is a King, but not the king we might expect. He does not have an army to save him from being arrested and put to death. He has not come to reign on earth, to amass power, or to ride into battle, but rather to bear witness to the truth. Those who are on the side of truth listen to Jesus’ voice. What would our lives be like if we were to truly live according to the teachings and example of Jesus?
