This feast day is not a general one of all those who were martyred in the terror of the French Revolution but of four specific groups who all died in Paris on 2nd and 3rd September 1792. Three were bishops, most were priests but they included some lay people. They died in the context of widespread and uncontolled violence that claimed the lives of many thousands.
