A ferry pulls into Bantry at evening time for its last stop before heading back to Whiddy Island

An artist watched children sailing a boat at the water’s edge, as the sun was setting at the end of a perfect day. There was something about the scene that touched the artist’s soul and he wanted to capture the moment on canvas to have for posterity.

But the artist had promised to meet a friend and the last bus was about to leave the seaside resort and he didn’t want to be late for his appointment. He met his friend but the haunting beauty of the boat scene stayed with him. He returned the following evening but the sunset wasn’t so colourful and no children were playing with their boat.

This little story is a reminder that the best opportunity is always today and now. This was at the heart of the worldwide demonstrations last Friday, calling for action to tackle global warming and climate change. The peaceful demonstrations by so many young people did make a difference. The obvious question is how do you know? The cynic will say it was a complete waste of time. But the real difference is that people do care, so many want action now and there is a genuine belief that we can make a difference.

Pope Francis has added the following; “As stewards of God’s creation, we are called to make the earth a beautiful garden for the human family. When we destroy our forests, ravage our soil and pollute our seas, we betray that noble calling.” Every person can begin to make a difference. We do our bit to be good stewards of God’s creation.
