The following reflection is by Triona Doherty called 'Love is the answer'

What is the most important thing we are called to do, above all else? Jesus tells us in today's Gospel. Love is the answer! We must love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and we must love our neighbour as ourselves. That second part is easier said than done. We all know people who put others first; parents who put aside their own needs for the sake of their children, or those who sacrifice everything to be full-time carers to a child or elderly family member.

Then there are those whose lives revolve around charity work, who are far more concerned with making life better for others than they are about their own pleasure or material wealth. And again, there are those who quietly go about their day's work, all the while showing love, respect and tolerance to all those they meet. Many of these people, in their own way, embody Jesus' instruction in today's Gospel. What better way to love God passionately, with all your being, than to spend your time caring for others? Whether that 'neighbour' is a family member or complete stranger, many people make it their life's mission to put Jesus' words into practice to 'love your neighbour as yourself'. Let us thank God for the example of all those who put his love into action to make this world a better place.
