'Jumping at several small opportunities may get us there more quickly than waiting for one big one to come along.' ~Hugh Allen

In the day before modern harbours, a ship had to wait for the flood tide before it could make it to port. In Latin this was called: 'ob portu'. It was a ship standing off at port, waiting for the moment when it could ride the turn of the tide to harbour. If the captain and crew missed this moment, then they would have to wait for the next tide to come in. From this came the word 'opportunity'.

Every day God presents us with different opportunities to make today a good day. With long dark winter evenings during the month of November it might seem as if opportunities are scarce and thin on the ground. Like any month there are no perfect days, few great days, an occasional awful day and hopefully on the balance of things many good days. Today can be a good day if I can do my best to seize the opportunities that bring the best out in me. It is often the small and seemingly insignificant ones that add up to something really special.
