The humble fern normally grows in abundance at ground level but here it is happy to grow up the side of an oak tree. Set against the blue sky it really stands out. It is a plant that likes lots of moisture. It’s an indicator just how much moisture we get as rain in Ireland that it’s so at home up on this tree.

‘When we are whom we are called to be, we will set the world ablaze.’ ~Catherine of Sienna

Today is the feast day of St.Catherine and she has been described as one of the most extraordinary figures in Christian history. She preached and acted against the evils of poverty and she preached and acted against corruption in the Church. She only learned to read and write in her adult years and as a lay woman she was an inspiration to all who knew her. So much could be said about Catherine but her constant message was to be yourself, let God touch others through you and use all you have to be a better person in this world. She had great confidence in doing much with the little we have. She described it as setting the world ablaze. What can I do today to set my day ablaze? Catherine would answer it in two simple words: Be yourself.

Only half of yesterday’s thought came up on the screen for some reason so it’s repeated below for those who were wondering where it had gone to!

‘May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvellous love. May you have the power to understand as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high and how deep God’s love really is.’ Ephesians 3:17-18

How would you respond if someone asked are you in love? Would it throw you or would you find it easy to answer? Are we in love with someone, with life, with God? These are key questions but any honest answer can only come from within? Love is a word that is often thrown around wildly and carelessly. It is thrown around so much that we have cheapened its real meaning and value. We hunger for love and we yearn for it. It is the greatest energy in the world but often we search for it in the wrong place. Our prayer today is to acknowledge those whom we love and who are so vital and important in our lives. May our roots go down deep into their soil and also into the soil of God’s marvellous love.
