Dominic was the founder of the Dominicans. When he became a priest there was a heresy running in the church called the Albigensian heresy. They held to two principles in the world one good and one evil. But they swung very much to the notion that all is evil and had an extremely negative focus in life. Dominic sensed the need for the Church to combat this heresy and was commissioned to be part of the preaching crusade against it. But the preaching was not a success. The people at ground level were not convinced by preachers who traveled with horses, who stayed in the best inns and had servants. So Dominic with three Cisterians, began itinerant preaching according to gospel values. He continued this work for 10 years with great success. From this his fellow preachers gradually became a community known as the Dominicans. Today their influence and work has spread to many parts of the world.
