Based in Italy he became a priest but lost many friends when we decided he wanted to work with the very poor and the incurable in hospital. He felt the clergy had become too lax and didn’t live close to the Gospel values. So he founded an order of priests to counteract what they saw around them. They called themselves the Theatines. They preached, served the sick and worked with the poor. They rejected all ownership of property. They expanded into different parts of Europe but never achieved the sort of worldwide expansion that the Jesuits did.
