Richard O’Shea from Scoil Mhuire, Blarney was announced the overall winner of the BT Young Scientist last evening. He was a hugely popular winner with his project entitled ‘A biomass fired cooking stove for developing countries.’ This clean and efficient biomass fired cooking stove can be made from waste materials such as tin cans. For poor countries this could make a massive impact and already Richard wants to donate his winning idea to charities all over the world. No wonder he is such a popular winner and we say well done and congratulations!

‘You may call God love, you may call God goodness. But the best name for God is compassion’ ~Meister Eckhart

Our names are special and important but the person behind each name is the most important of all. There is a story told about a college lecturer who gave his students a quiz. The students were flying through the quiz until they came to the last question: ‚ÄúWhat is the first name of the woman who cleans the rooms of our department?‚Äù Surely this was a joke. Many students had seen the woman in question but didn’t quite know her name. So many students left the last question blank. At the end of the class, one student asked if the last question would count towards a grade. ‚ÄúAbsolutely‚Äù said the professor. ‚ÄúIn your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say hello.‚Äù These words hit home with those students who in turn found out that that the name of the woman in question was Dorothy.
