‘But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.’ ~2 Chronicles 15:7

There are many famous mountain climbers in the world, such as Edmund Hilary, Reinhold Messner and Pat Falvey. Don Bennet is another name that stands out because he was the first amputee to climb Mt. Rainier. This mountain towers to 14,410 feet or 4,392 meters. Don Bennet managed to do it on one leg and two crutches. On his first attempt, he got within 125 meters but a howling windstorm almost blew him off and he had no choice but to abandon the climb. A year later he tried it again and made it to the top in five days. When asked how he did it he replied: “One hop at a time! When it was toughest and I was really exhausted, I would look at the path ahead and say, I just have to take one more step, anybody can do that. And then I would.” There is also a message in there for us too. We can also get through the difficult moments in our lives by taking it one step at a time. It might seem an impossible task for a person with one leg, and two crutches to climb a high mountain through ice and snow. But it all became possible with his personal mantra: “You just have to take one more step, anybody can do that.” Scripture also encourages us to be strong and not to give up. If we can do that we will persevere and achieve what we want, no matter how difficult our situation may be.
