There is a lovely gardening programme on RTE each Thursday called ‘Secret Garden’. It follows the story of Dermot O’Neill as he strives to restore his secret Victorian walled garden. This is his dream, his passion or as some might say, a kind of madness. Last year when the programme ran he was battling stomach cancer. The garden gave him the reason why and the hope he needed to keep going through his illness. This current series follows the progress of his garden and how all the plants and trees are doing. Some are doing great, some holding their own and some struggling.

The garden is also a reflection on our own lives. Some things are going great and some parts are struggling. A gardener gives every chance to a plant that is struggling. The same goes with God. God’s thinking is not to throw out but to give every opportunity for growth, encouragement and to do our best with what we have. We are invited to turn to God who is the source of everything that is needed to bring energy and life where it is needed the most.
