‘Jesus taught us to love people and to use things. But in our society we use people and love things.’ ~Richard Rohr

What a wise reflection and so true. During the boom years we all can remember when there was huge emphasis on things such as cars, clothes, gadgets and houses. Today in tough economic times, everyone has learned that you simply can’t have everything. We use the word ‘no’ much more frequently now. There is a growing awareness that happiness doesn’t always come from having or owning things. It often comes from within. If we expect to find happiness exclusively from external things we are going to be disappointed. Jesus in our Gospels encourages us to use things, enjoy them but not to love them. There is a world of a difference between the two.
