Thomas was known in his lifetime as ‘the model of bishops’, ‘the alsmgiver’ and ‘the father of the poor’. He joined the Augustinians and later was to become their provincial. He was noted for his deep concern for each friar in his care and especially those who were sick. As provincial he was responsible for sending the first group of missionaries to Mexico. Surprisingly he did not attend the Council of Trent but felt his representative would get across his view points. He fell ill in August 1555 and distributed all his money to the poor and gave his possessions to the rector of the college. He died the following month. In art he is usually shown as a bishop surrounded by poor people.
