Godric was born in England, he led a most remarkable life having been a peddler, sailor and ships captain, bailiff before spending 50 years as a hermit. He may not be one of the better known saints but his life touched many people.
As a hermit he made his own rules, he was a great listener and wise counsellor. His life was dedicated mostly to prayerful solitude. He lived to be 100 years and towards the end of his life received a letter of encouragement from Pope Alexander II which still survives today. He died on May 21st 1170.
