Today is all about Carlo Acutis who becomes a saint today.

Today a young man named Carlo Acutis will be canonised a Saint by Pope Leo in Saint Peter’s square in Rome. It is a historic occasion for several reasons. Carlo Acutis is the first Millennial Saint and will be the first saint to be canonised by our new pope. He was born on May 3rd 1991 and died from leukaemia on Oct 12th 2006. At least two miracles have been attributed to his intercession and this number looks set to grow. The life of Carlo may have been a short 15 years but in that time he did so much. His appeal crosses all age groups, but with particular appeal for young people.

From a young age, Carlo had a special love of God even though his parents were not initially particularly religious. He was gifted at working with computers. He taught himself some of the basic coding languages including C and C++. Carlo used his computer skills to create a website that promoted his love of the Eucharist.  He loved playing video games using PlayStation and Xbox. He is the first modern saint to have had an email address!

What does Carlo Acutis becoming a saint mean for us? The fact that he is a young person and only died in 2006 makes him a very modern saint. His life shows that it is possible to live a healthy spiritual life while also engaging with modern technology in a positive way. He found this beautiful balance which is so rare today. Carlo had a great love of Jesus whose presence he really felt in the Eucharist. He felt his call was to share this great love of Jesus by using modern technology. He will be beatified a saint tomorrow and we ask his many beautiful blessings on all of us and especially on all young people.

(The Mass will be broadcast on RTE and other similar channels at 10a.m)
