Thought For The Week

‘For there is always light,

if only we’re brave enough to see it.

If only we’re brave enough to be it.’ ~Amanda Gorman

There were many stand out moments during the inauguration of President Joe Biden last Wednesday. But it was the recital by poet Amanda Gorman that really captured the attention of everybody who was watching. She had a beautiful youthful spirit, energy, conviction and truly believed everything she was saying.

The last lines of her poem were also so timely in the midst of this Covid 19 pandemic. She said there is always light if we”re brave enough to see it and if we’re brave enough to be it. This is a powerful end to her poem. We are reminded that there will always be light but it is something we sometimes have to look for. When life is challenging, difficult, sad or stressful it is often hard to see this light. We need to be brave and turn towards this light even if we do it slowly.

In nature flowers will always turn naturally towards the direction of sunlight but this movement is always done slowly. Our natural inclination is to turn towards the light but sometimes we must make the effort to turn in its direction. Darkness can often have a bigger pull. This is the way life is.

It is great to see so many who are trying to be the light for other members of their families. This week we saw so many touching clips of parents being an amazing light for children with special needs and who are struggling during this latest lockdown. We also have seen many moving clips of our doctors, nurses and caring teams reaching out and being an incredible light for our very sick in hospital the vast majority of them with Covid 19.

Spiritually our scriptures remind us that God is our light. We are reminded that God is source of this light and is the one who helps us through the darkest moments of our lives. As believers we are also called to be the light and to do our best to share this light with others. When others are struggling and in darkness we hold the light for them. We all play our part in different ways.
