While taking a quick walk yesterday at lunchtime in Curabinny Woods, this tree with its lovely roots stood out. They remind me of the journey of Lent and how we are invited to push our roots into good soil. The journey of Lent is spread out over time, to give us every opportunity to make sure our roots go from shallow soil to soil with plenty of depth.

Significance Of Today

Today is World Hippo Day. Experts believe that the modern-day hippo evolved in Africa around 8 million years ago. While they bear a resemblance to horses and pigs, these semi-aquatic mammals are in fact most closely related to whales, dolphins and porpoises – no wonder they’re so good at holding their breath underwater! In Africa,  hippo numbers are sadly declining.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed them as a vulnerable species, after establishing that the hippo population had declined by as much as 20% within the previous two decades. Drought has led to habitat loss, and the hunting and poaching of hippos, both for their meat and ivory teeth, is also a major threat.World Hippo Day reminds us to celebrate and value these mud-loving mammals, in the hope that they’ll be around for many more years to come.

Video for the Week 🎥

This is the new video called ‘Ash Wednesday What it’s all about’

Thought For The Week

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and is a time of reflection and preparation leading up to Easter. Ash Wednesday falls 46 days before Easter Sunday and always begins on a Wednesday. It is never the same date each year. Easter always falls on the Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21st

The ashes are a powerful symbol of our mortality and that we are simply pilgrims passing through this world. When the ashes are gently applied to our foreheads with the sign of the cross, we are invited to reflect on life and to do something good during the journey of Lent.

The ashes remind us that everyone is equal. No one is superior or better than anybody else. The ashes are also an outward sign that you stand out as a person loved by God. The ashes remind us that we are all connected. The ashes remind us that now is the time to do something good – not tomorrow or next week but today. Ash Wednesday starts the journey of Lent which means springtime. May your journey through Lent be a time of hope and new beginnings for you.

Amen
